November always reminds us how grateful we are - for family, friends, health and happiness. However, for some, it can also be a time of worry as they struggle to put food on the table, especially during the holiday season.
According to Feeding America, 1 in 11 people in New Hampshire face hunger, while 1 in 9 children face the same struggle. For Ty Morris, an agent in our New London office, that uncertainty sparked an idea.
In 2019, Ty organized a Stuff-A-Truck food drive at the New London Hannaford supermarket with the help of the Lake Sunapee Region Young Professionals Network. They put out the word and started looking for volunteers to help make this event possible. They were soon joined by volunteers from Grounds, Millennial Moving, Dance Arts Academy, Charles Schwabb and Legacy Mortgage. The success of that first event led to the temporary opening of the Andover Food Pantry to benefit families and individuals just before Thanksgiving.
In 2020, during a pandemic, they were able to collect 900 pounds of food and over $3,000 in monetary donations! The food and funds collected were distributed to the Twin Rivers Interfaith Food Pantry in Franklin, Warner Connects, KLS Community Food Pantry in New London, and the Kearsarge and Andover K-8 schools. An astounding accomplishment during a difficult year!
Ty shared with us that the goal this year is to collect 1,000 pounds of food and $5,000 in monetary donations. The third annual event will take place at the New London Hannaford supermarket on Saturday, November 21, from 8:00am to 5:00pm.
